AMVCA 2026: Iyabo Ojo Celebrates Double Nominations for Labake Olododo, Sends Heartwarming Message to Co-Nominees

Published

on

Nollywood veteran Iyabo Ojo has taken to social media to celebrate after her indigenous film Labake Olododo secured multiple nominations at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, positioning the actress and filmmaker as one of the notable names in this year’s highly competitive AMVCA season.

The AMVCA 2026 nominations were officially announced on March 30, with the ceremony set for May 9, 2026, in Lagos, Nigeria. Among the films earning recognition in the indigenous language categories, Labake Olododo stood out as a strong entry from the West African region, earning Iyabo Ojo a moment to celebrate the fruits of her creative investment.

In the Best Indigenous Language Film – West Africa category, Labake Olododo is listed alongside its ensemble cast including Alice Iyabo Ojo, Olukanmi Abayomi, Alaba Onaolapo, Kene Okwuosa, and Ladun Awobokun, as the film competes against strong contenders including The Serpent’s Gift, Lisabi: A Legend Is Born, Aljana, and Olorisha. The film also received recognition in the Best Makeup category, with Adeola Thelma Bamgboye’s work on the production earning a separate nod — bringing the total number of nominations associated with the project to two.

Taking to her social media pages to react to the news, Iyabo Ojo expressed gratitude to the AMVCA organisers, her cast, crew, and co-nominees, describing the recognition as a reward for hard work and a testament to the power of indigenous storytelling. In a message that resonated warmly with fans, she acknowledged her fellow nominees with grace, celebrating the quality of competition and the collective achievement of everyone in the category.

The double recognition is particularly meaningful for Iyabo Ojo, who has been one of the most visible advocates for Yoruba-language cinema in recent years. Labake Olododo represents her continued commitment to telling authentic Nigerian stories in ways that speak directly to home audiences, and its presence among this year’s AMVCA nominees signals that the industry is paying attention.

This year’s AMVCA features 32 award categories in total — 18 decided by a jury and 11 open to public voting — with two special honours also on the table: the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Trailblazer Award. For the first time, two new categories have been added — Best Indigenous Language (North Africa) and Best Indigenous Language (Central Africa) — expanding the recognition of African storytelling beyond the usual borders and making this one of the most inclusive editions of the AMVCAs yet.

Leading the nominations overall are Gingerrr and The Herd, each earning nine nominations across major and technical categories, while To Kill A Monkey follows closely with eight, and My Father’s Shadow secured seven nominations.

Public voting for select categories opened at 8 PM on March 29 and closes April 26, with winners to be crowned at the ceremony on May 9, 2026, in Lagos.

For Iyabo Ojo, May 9 could mark yet another milestone in a career that has consistently found ways to evolve and remain relevant. For now, the double nominations alone are reason enough to celebrate.

Published

on

Veteran Nollywood actor Yinka Quadri has spoken about his decades-long friendship with fellow actress Saje, which dates back to their early days in the movie industry.

According to Quadri, Saje was already close to his wife before the couple married, and she has kept that bond over the years without engaging in gossip. He said she knew about some of his relationships with other women but never passed the information on to his wife, describing her as someone who can be trusted.

The Agba Aki  of Oro Kingdom also recalled a time he considered helping Saje’s husband, Rafiu Balogun, during a difficult period in their marriage. He told Saje that Rafiu wanted to accompany him to a movie location, expecting her to object because of their misunderstanding. Instead, she welcomed the idea. Quadri said he felt obliged to inform her because of her friendship with his wife.
The actor also spoke on pay in the movie industry, insisting he would not expect to earn more than younger colleagues simply because of his experience.

Citing Funke Akindele and Lateef Adedimeji as examples, he said, “If I’m being called to a job, and Funke Akindele and Lateef Adedimeji are going to be paid the same amount, I’m an enemy of God if I’m expecting that they should pay me more than him.”

The veteran actor added that actors negotiate their fees differently. Some accept whatever they are offered, while others insist on the amount they want. He concluded that such differences are simply part of life.
