NITDA: Federal Government Moves to Strengthen Nigeria’s Coordinated Innovation Ecosystem

Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has signalled a decisive federal push to deepen and coordinate the country’s innovation ecosystem, as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to position Nigeria as a competitive digital economy on the global stage. The move reflects a growing recognition at the highest levels of government that fragmented innovation efforts, while individually commendable, have limited the country’s ability to scale tech-driven growth in a meaningful and sustainable way.
At the heart of this initiative is a deliberate strategy to bring together key players across the public and private sectors, from startups and technology hubs to academic institutions and regulatory bodies, under a more structured and collaborative framework. NITDA, which serves as the primary agency for regulating and developing the information technology sector in Nigeria, is expected to anchor this coordination role, ensuring that policy direction, funding pathways, and capacity-building programmes speak to each other rather than operate in silos.
The agency has long been a central figure in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, and this latest drive builds on existing frameworks such as the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS), which has guided the country’s tech ambitions since 2020. What the Federal Government now appears to be pursuing is a more execution-focused layer — one that closes the gap between policy articulation and on-the-ground impact, particularly for indigenous innovators and emerging technology entrepreneurs who have often found it difficult to navigate an ecosystem that lacks clear entry points and support structures.
Industry observers have welcomed the development, noting that Nigeria’s tech ecosystem, despite producing some of Africa’s most celebrated unicorns and attracting hundreds of millions in venture capital, has struggled with infrastructure deficits, regulatory uncertainty, and a disconnect between innovation output and domestic economic absorption. A more coordinated approach, backed by federal authority, could address some of these structural pain points while also creating a more predictable environment for both local and foreign investors looking to bet on Nigerian innovation.
For everyday Nigerians, especially the millions of young people who have staked their futures on the promise of the digital economy, the real test will be whether this latest federal intervention translates into tangible opportunities: better-funded incubators, faster regulatory approvals, improved internet access, and a job market that actually rewards homegrown digital talent. NITDA and the Federal Government have set the intention. The ecosystem is watching closely to see the execution.

NYSC Abduction: APM Faults Tinubu’s Silence, Demands Urgent Rescue Action

The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has expressed concern over what it described as President Bola Tinubu’s silence following the abduction of prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State.
The party called on the President to demonstrate greater urgency in addressing the incident and ensure that security agencies intensify efforts to rescue those still being held by their abductors.
The APM, through the Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation (MDPCO), said the failure of the President to publicly address the latest incident was troubling, particularly given the concerns of affected families.
The abduction occurred on October 1, when gunmen reportedly attacked two buses conveying prospective corps members and other passengers from Ibadan, Oyo State, to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
The vehicles were intercepted around Umunoha along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State.
Following the attack, the Imo State Police Command announced that 10 victims had been rescued, while search-and-rescue operations continued to locate the remaining abductees.
The campaign organisation described the incident as another indication of the security challenges facing the country and accused the Tinubu administration of failing to take sufficiently proactive measures against kidnapping and other violent crimes.
It argued that Nigerians, particularly young graduates travelling to fulfil their national service obligations, should be able to move across the country without fear of abduction.
The group also called for a more coordinated and intelligence-driven security strategy, emphasising the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies, preventive operations and faster responses to threats.
The APM further contrasted the Federal Government’s approach with the security model it said was being implemented by its presidential candidate, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
It maintained that improved intelligence gathering, coordination and rapid response should form the foundation of efforts to tackle insecurity.
Meanwhile, the abduction has triggered anxiety among the victims’ families, with reports that the kidnappers demanded ₦50 million for each victim.
The party urged the Federal Government to treat the safe recovery of the abducted prospective corps members as an urgent national priority and provide the necessary support for ongoing rescue operations.
The allegations against the President represent the APM’s political position on the government’s handling of insecurity. Security agencies have continued their operations following the attack.
