ADC Relying on Emotions Instead of Law, Risks Fielding No Candidate in 2027 — Keyamo

The crisis engulfing the African Democratic Congress has drawn a sharp rebuke from Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who warned on Friday that the party’s David Mark-led faction is dangerously mistaken if it thinks public posturing can substitute for sound legal strategy ahead of 2027.
Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, made the remarks in a post on his X handle, saying the David Mark-led faction of the party was relying on “emotional reasoning and blackmail” to escape what he described as a self-inflicted legal crisis. “The David Mark’s faction of the ADC really think they can use emotional reasoning and blackmail to bluff their way out of a purely legal conundrum they brought upon themselves. Unfortunately for them, law does not admit of sentiment,” Keyamo wrote.
The minister’s comments come on the heels of a dramatic development at the Independent National Electoral Commission. INEC announced that it would no longer recognise or engage with either the faction led by David Mark or that associated with Nafiu Bala Gombe, and would not monitor their meetings, congresses, or conventions until the matter is resolved at the Federal High Court. The commission also confirmed it would remove Mark’s name from its official portal.
The leadership crisis in the ADC stems from the emergence of a caretaker committee led by former Senate President David Mark, which was challenged in court by Nafiu Bala, a former vice chairman of the party. Bala argued that he should have assumed leadership following the resignation of the party’s former national chairman, Ralph Nwosu, whose exit in July 2025 led to the formation of the Mark-led National Working Committee.
Keyamo took particular aim at the ADC’s invocation of the legal concept of “status quo ante bellum” — the court-ordered preservation of affairs as they existed before the dispute — describing it as a distraction from the real issue. “All those who are arguing about ‘status quo ante bellum’ are dispensing their time and energy chasing shadows and not the substance. Decisions are based on facts, evidence, and the interpretation of laws, rather than on sympathy, emotion or political considerations,” he stated.
The implications for the opposition party’s 2027 ambitions are severe. He warned that with a court case still pending over the takeover of the party, all the actions taken by either faction could ultimately be void. “The implication is that the ADC may end up having NO CANDIDATE for the election,” he said.
Rather than attacking INEC, Keyamo urged the party to view the commission’s withdrawal of recognition as a timely warning. “Therefore, instead of vilifying INEC, the ADC should rather thank INEC for this timely action of de-recognising both factions BEFORE the close of the window for nominating candidates. It has duly forewarned the Party of the danger ahead,” he stated.
He said the ADC now had three options: find a new, legally secure platform; seek accelerated hearing of the matter in court; or quickly resolve the leadership dispute through negotiation.
Keyamo also moved to dismiss any suggestion that the APC or INEC had engineered the ADC’s problems. “Neither APC nor INEC prodded these grown adults and supposedly ‘experienced’ politicians to go and hijack an existing platform without sound legal advice and without properly sorting out every member of the leadership of that existing platform,” he said.
When informed that David Mark’s faction had declared its intention to proceed with party congresses and its convention despite INEC’s decision and the Court of Appeal ruling, Keyamo was dismissive. “That is fine by us. NEVER INTERRUPT YOUR OPPONENT WHEN HE IS MAKING A MISTAKE,” he wrote.
The ADC’s David Mark, for his part, has not backed down. He called for the resignation of INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan, describing INEC’s action as an attack on democracy, and declared that the party would proceed with its congresses starting April 9, 2026, ending with a convention on April 14.
As the legal battle deepens and the 2027 election calendar ticks forward, the ADC finds itself fighting on two fronts — in the courts and against an APC that appears content to let the opposition unravel from within.

Atiku Accuses APC Government of Pushing More Nigerians Into Poverty

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government, accusing the administration of worsening poverty and economic hardship across Nigeria.
Atiku made the remarks in a statement published on Thursday, October 1, 2026, where he questioned the economic direction of the country under the APC government.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain argued that the administration’s economic policies had placed additional pressure on households and businesses, making it increasingly difficult for many Nigerians to meet their basic needs.
He maintained that government claims of economic progress should be measured against the living conditions of ordinary citizens rather than financial and economic statistics alone.
Atiku Questions Government’s Economic Performance
The former vice president has repeatedly criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the economy, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange reforms.
In previous remarks, Atiku argued that rising petrol prices had increased transportation, production and food costs, leaving households with reduced purchasing power. He also called on President Bola Tinubu to consider measures that would ease the cost-of-living burden. (Channels Television)
He has also challenged the administration’s reliance on macroeconomic indicators to demonstrate progress, insisting that economic reforms should translate into improved living standards for Nigerians. (The Guardian)
Atiku’s latest criticism comes as political parties and their candidates continue preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the economy expected to remain a major issue in political discussions.

2027 Election Will Be Decided by Nigerians, Not Billionaires – Makinde

The presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has said the outcome of the 2027 presidential election will be determined by Nigerian voters rather than wealthy individuals or the amount of money spent on campaigns.
Makinde made the statement on Monday at the APM North-Central Zonal Town Hall Meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, as part of the party’s engagements ahead of the 2027 election.
The Oyo State governor, who is campaigning under the “Reset Nigeria” agenda, said he did not believe the election would be decided by political commentators, opinion polls, the number of billionaires supporting candidates or the financial resources available to political campaigns.
According to him, the people of Nigeria would ultimately determine who emerges from the election.
Makinde also criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the economy, arguing that increased allocations to states had not necessarily translated into reduced hardship for citizens.
He acknowledged that states were receiving more money from the Federation Account but questioned whether the additional funds had resulted in meaningful progress in addressing hunger and other economic challenges.
The governor also spoke about Nigeria’s security situation, questioning the budgetary planning behind the establishment of additional army divisions. He said he had examined the 2026 budget for provisions relating to the new formations but could not identify the funding he expected for them.
Makinde outlines ‘Reset Nigeria’ agenda
The APM presidential candidate said his proposed “Reset Nigeria” programme would focus on four major areas: security, education, the economy and the country’s socio-political environment.
He said the programme could be implemented within four years if he becomes president, including changes to Nigeria’s security architecture and greater use of data and science in economic management.
Makinde further said his administration would commence a transition to a government of national unity from May 29, 2027, which he said would eventually lead to what he described as “new players and a new agenda” for Nigeria’s development.
The Lafia meeting formed part of the APM’s zonal consultations and political engagements ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“Nigeria Has Finished Making Sacrifices, Things Will Get Better Soon” — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians not to lose hope in the country, assuring citizens that Nigeria is on the right path toward economic recovery, peace and sustainable development.
Tinubu made the remarks on Friday, September 25, 2026, during a special Juma’at prayer service at the National Mosque in Abuja, organised as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The President was represented at the event by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.
According to Tinubu, his administration is addressing what he described as the “cumulative mistakes and missed opportunities” of previous governments. He said Nigerians had already endured the necessary sacrifices and that there was now “light at the end of the tunnel.”
“Nigerians have finished making sacrifices for this country to be great again.”
He further assured citizens that “peace is coming back to this country” and “development is coming back to this country,” adding that things would get better as Nigeria progresses in its democracy.
Tinubu also called for continued support for his administration, saying Nigerians should give the government more opportunity to complete the reforms and programmes it has begun.
Bola Tinubu’s remarks come as Nigerians prepare to mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, with economic hardship, security and the effects of ongoing reforms remaining major issues in the national conversation.
