Portugal winger Francisco Conceição has called for further improvement from his team despite scoring the decisive goal in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Nigeria’s Super Eagles in an international friendly.

Conceição emerged as the hero for the European side after netting the winning goal in the second half to secure victory in Leiria. The result marked Portugal’s final preparation match ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after the game, the winger expressed delight with the win and his goal but insisted that Portugal still has areas to work on before the start of the World Cup campaign.

According to Conceição, every player in the squad is focused on helping the team succeed, adding that victories are important for building confidence ahead of a major tournament. He, however, acknowledged that improvements are still needed despite the positive result.

Portugal had taken the lead through Pedro Neto before Nigeria responded with an equaliser from Akor Adams. The match remained evenly balanced until Conceição produced a moment of brilliance in the second half to restore Portugal’s advantage and seal the win.

The winger also expressed confidence in head coach Roberto Martínez and the technical crew to address any shortcomings before Portugal’s opening World Cup fixture.

While Portugal celebrated the victory, Nigeria earned praise for a spirited display, with the Super Eagles creating several opportunities and matching the hosts for long periods of the encounter.

With the World Cup now around the corner, Conceição believes Portugal must continue refining their performances as they aim to challenge for football’s biggest prize.

Published

on

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is on the brink of another major milestone in his international career as he prepares to make his 100th appearance for Nigeria in the high-profile friendly against Portugal.

The Fulham star currently has 99 official caps for the national team and is expected to become only the fourth Nigerian player to reach the 100-cap mark if he features in the encounter.

Iwobi made his senior debut for Nigeria in 2015 and has since established himself as one of the most consistent performers for the Super Eagles. Over the years, he has represented the country at the FIFA World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations, and several international competitions, becoming a key figure in the national team setup.

The midfielder’s achievement would place him alongside Nigerian football greats such as Vincent Enyeama and Joseph Yobo, who both earned 101 caps during their international careers.

While Ahmed Musa remains Nigeria’s most-capped player with over 100 appearances, Iwobi’s expected landmark appearance against Portugal would further cement his place among the country’s football elite.

The friendly against Portugal is expected to provide a stern test for the Super Eagles as they continue preparations for upcoming international assignments. However, much of the spotlight will be on Iwobi, who stands on the verge of writing another chapter in Nigeria’s football history.

For Nigerian fans, the occasion represents not only a significant personal achievement for the midfielder but also a celebration of a player who has remained a dependable presence in the national team for more than a decade.

Newcastle Lead Race for Zadok Yohanna After Tabling Highest Bid

Premier League side Newcastle United have emerged as frontrunners in the pursuit of highly-rated Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna after reportedly submitting the most attractive offer for the AIK winger.

The 18-year-old has become one of the most sought-after young talents in Europe following his impressive performances in Sweden, attracting interest from several top clubs, including Brighton, Chelsea, Manchester City and Rennes.

However, Newcastle’s determination to secure the youngster appears to have given them an edge over rival suitors. Reports indicate that the Magpies have tabled the highest bid on the table, surpassing offers made by competing clubs.

According to transfer reports, Newcastle’s proposal is believed to be worth around €24 million to €25 million, a figure that has placed the club at the front of the queue for Yohanna’s signature.

The club’s interest is also linked to its ongoing squad rebuild, with manager Eddie Howe keen to strengthen his attacking options following recent changes in the team. Yohanna is viewed as a player with enormous potential who could develop into a key figure for the club in the coming years.

Yohanna has enjoyed a breakthrough season with AIK, earning praise for his pace, dribbling ability and attacking flair. His rapid rise has seen scouts from several European giants closely monitor his progress.

Despite Newcastle’s current advantage, the race remains open, with Chelsea and other clubs still exploring the possibility of hijacking the deal before a final agreement is reached.

For now, Newcastle’s willingness to make the strongest financial commitment appears to be the main reason they are leading the chase for one of Nigeria’s brightest young football prospects.
