APC Sets the Stage for March 2026 Convention, Inaugurates 92-Member Planning Committee Led by Former Governor Masari

The All Progressives Congress is making it clear that 2026 will be a year of internal consolidation — and it is not moving quietly.
At a ceremony held on Wednesday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda formally inaugurated the party’s National Central Coordinating Committee for its 2026 National Convention, officially setting in motion a process the ruling party is billing as far more than a routine exercise in party administration. The convention itself is scheduled to hold on March 27 and 28, 2026, and will culminate in the election of new national party officers while setting the strategic compass for the APC heading into the 2027 general elections.
The National Convention Planning Committee has 92 members, and it is stacked with some of the most recognisable names in Nigerian politics. Former Governor of Katsina State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Bello Masari, will serve as Chairman of the committee, with former Senate President Senator Anyim Pius Anyim appointed as Vice Chairman I, while the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, will serve as Vice Chairman II. Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who also leads the Progressive Governors’ Forum, chairs the broader central coordination structure, with Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe serving as Secretary.
Beyond the leadership structure, the party has also set up 17 sub-committees to ensure every operational detail is covered. These committees will oversee key aspects of the convention including aspirant screening, elections, security, finance, media, logistics, legal matters, and emergency response. Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State chairs the aspirant screening committee, with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma heading the finance committee alongside Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as co-chairman — a clear indication of how seriously the party is approaching what it describes as a landmark gathering.
Yilwatda set the tone at the inauguration with language that was as much a political statement as it was an administrative one. He told the committee members that they were being entrusted with a responsibility that goes beyond logistics — they were being asked to deliver a convention that reflects the stature and democratic credentials of a ruling party. “You have been called upon to plan and deliver a convention that would be transparent, inclusive, and credible, befitting of a ruling party of great stature like the APC. I charge you all to rise above partisan interest and personal sentiment. Time is of the essence. And I expect nothing short of excellence from each and every one of you,” he said, before formally declaring the 2026 convention process open.
He also did not pass up the opportunity to remind the gathering of the recent scoreline on the political field. Pointing to the APC’s sweep of five out of six FCT Area Council chairmanship seats the previous weekend, its by-election victories in Kano, and its clean 4-for-4 showing in Rivers State, Yilwatda argued that the opposition’s claim to have any meaningful presence in those territories had been decisively buried. He described the results as proof that the APC’s grassroots structures remain far superior to anything the opposition coalition has assembled.
Masari, responding on behalf of the committee, accepted the assignment with a tone that was measured and deliberate. “We accept this responsibility with humility, a strong sense of duty and firm commitment to the ideals and aspirations of our great party,” he said, pledging broad consultations, strict adherence to the party’s constitution, and an unwavering commitment to delivering a convention that every member can stand behind. He was direct about the risks of getting it wrong, warning that internal ambition must not be allowed to fracture the party at a moment when unity is its greatest asset.
No specific date beyond the March 27–28 window has been publicly confirmed, but party sources indicate preparations are accelerating, with all sub-committees expected to commence work immediately. The APC has also released a congress timetable that includes ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses leading up to the national convention — with Ekiti, Osun, Rivers States, and the FCT excluded from the lower congresses but confirmed as participants in the national convention itself.
With the machinery now formally in motion, the APC is making one thing abundantly clear — it intends to arrive at the 2027 ballot box not as a party that survived its own internal turbulence, but as one that has used the convention process to emerge stronger, more united, and more formidable than ever before.

There is a phrase being deployed with increasing urgency in the build-up to the Ekiti State governorship election, and it is carrying more weight than political sloganeering typically warrants. “Ballot revolution.” It is the language of Oluyede and in the mouth of a man who has clearly thought carefully about what ails governance in Ekiti and what, precisely, it would take to fix it, the phrase is not hyperbole. It is a diagnosis and a prescription delivered in the same breath, aimed squarely at a citizenry that Oluyede appears to believe is ready to be spoken to seriously rather than managed quietly.
Oluyede’s central argument is as straightforward as it is demanding that the quality of governance a people receive is inseparable from the quality of choices they make at the ballot box. What Oluyede is betting on, and what his ballot revolution message implicitly trusts, is that Ekiti voters are capable of making that moment count. The activist, journalist, and African Action Congress leader has called for a ₦500,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, a figure that sits dramatically above the current national minimum wage and that has, predictably, ignited a fierce debate about labour rights, economic realism, and the yawning gap between what Nigerian workers are paid and what it actually costs to survive in the country today. For Sowore, the number is not a negotiating position. It is a statement of principle about the value of human labour in a nation that has for too long treated its working class as an afterthought.
The context in which this demand lands is not incidental. It is everything. Nigeria is navigating one of the most bruising economic periods in its recent history, defined by fuel subsidy removal, a dramatically weakened naira, inflation that has compressed the purchasing power of ordinary workers to levels that were unimaginable just a few years ago, and a cost of living that has outpaced wages so comprehensively that millions of employed Nigerians are, by any honest assessment, living in poverty. The ₦70,000 minimum wage that was signed into law in 2024, celebrated at the time as a hard-won concession from the federal government, has already been overtaken by the economic realities it was meant to address, a cruel irony that labour unions, civil society, and workers themselves have not been slow to point out.

For Nigerian workers grinding through twelve-hour days in markets, offices, factories, and farms for wages that do not cover their transport costs, let alone their rent, feeding, and school fees, Sowore’s demand will feel less like political theatre and more like the first time someone has said out loud what they have been feeling for years. Whether the political will exists to translate that feeling into policy is another matter entirely, but the demand is on the table, and it is not going away quietly.

Sowore’s own shadow looms large over this development, as it inevitably must.
