2Baba Declares Afrobeats Indestructible, Points to Next Generation of Artists as Proof the Genre Is in Safe Hands

Nigerian music pioneer Innocent Idibia — widely known as 2Baba or 2Face — has delivered an emphatic vote of confidence in the future of Afrobeats, dismissing forecasts of the genre’s decline as fundamentally misplaced and pointing to the relentless emergence of fresh talent as the most persuasive argument for its immortality.
Speaking during a candid conversation on Wazobia FM Lagos with host Yaw, the award-winning artist dismissed claims that Afrobeats could decline, insisting that its future is entirely secure and attributing the genre’s longevity to the constant emergence of fresh talent — stressing that young artists are driving its growth and evolution.
He was unambiguous in his verdict — the genre is in safe hands, and anyone who has listened carefully to the current generation of young Afrobeats artists would have no difficulty agreeing. He offered a personal example to illustrate the point, noting that a young artist named Fola had recently remade his classic song “If Love Is A Crime,” and that the result — characterised by soft, smooth vocals and an unmistakably fresh approach — had genuinely impressed him. He described the present crop of artists as having special flows and unique styles that he personally admires.
The remarks from 2Baba carry unusual weight given the vantage point from which he speaks. As one of the foundational architects of the sound that the world now calls Afrobeats, his career spans the genre’s entire journey — from a period when Nigerian music was commercially fragile and largely invisible to global audiences, to the present era in which Nigerian artists fill arenas on every continent and compete for Grammy Awards.
Industry observers say the confidence 2Baba expressed reflects a broader truth about Afrobeats — a genre now competing on the world’s biggest stages, where its cultural and commercial footprint continues to expand even as debates about legacy, global numbers, and artistic direction grow more animated and public.
His comments arrive at a moment when Afrobeats is simultaneously facing both its greatest international triumph and its most searching internal questions — about whether the genre’s global expansion risks diluting its African identity, and whether commercial success can be sustained without sacrificing authenticity. For 2Baba, those questions miss the essential point: as long as young Nigerian artists continue to emerge with the creativity and hunger visible in today’s scene, the music will never stop speaking to the world.

Madam Saje Knew About Some Women I Dated but Never Told My Wife – Yinka Quadri
Veteran Nollywood actor Yinka Quadri has spoken about his decades-long friendship with fellow actress Saje, which dates back to their early days in the movie industry.
According to Quadri, Saje was already close to his wife before the couple married, and she has kept that bond over the years without engaging in gossip. He said she knew about some of his relationships with other women but never passed the information on to his wife, describing her as someone who can be trusted.
The Agba Aki of Oro Kingdom also recalled a time he considered helping Saje’s husband, Rafiu Balogun, during a difficult period in their marriage. He told Saje that Rafiu wanted to accompany him to a movie location, expecting her to object because of their misunderstanding. Instead, she welcomed the idea. Quadri said he felt obliged to inform her because of her friendship with his wife.
The actor also spoke on pay in the movie industry, insisting he would not expect to earn more than younger colleagues simply because of his experience.
Citing Funke Akindele and Lateef Adedimeji as examples, he said, “If I’m being called to a job, and Funke Akindele and Lateef Adedimeji are going to be paid the same amount, I’m an enemy of God if I’m expecting that they should pay me more than him.”
The veteran actor added that actors negotiate their fees differently. Some accept whatever they are offered, while others insist on the amount they want. He concluded that such differences are simply part of life.

Nigerian Dancer Ben Dancer Completes Seven-Day GWR Marathon in Lagos

Nigerian dancer Benjamin Daniel Gabriel, popularly known as Ben Dancer, has completed a seven-day dance marathon in Lagos as he seeks to set a new Guinness World Records title for the longest dance marathon by an individual.
Daniel concluded the physically demanding challenge at about noon on Tuesday at Freedom Park, Lagos, after dancing for more than seven days. His team said the final time recorded was seven days, eight hours, 32 minutes and 59 seconds.
The 33-year-old had initially set a target of 168 hours, hoping to surpass the existing Guinness World Records mark of 127 hours, achieved by Indian dancer Srushti Sudhir Jagtap in 2023.
However, Guinness World Records has not yet officially declared Daniel the new record holder.
A spokesperson for Guinness told the BBC that Daniel’s application remains active and that evidence from the attempt must be submitted and reviewed through the organisation’s verification process before any new record can be confirmed.
Nigerian culture takes centre stage
Throughout the marathon, Ben Dancer incorporated different Nigerian dance styles and musical genres into his performance.
Afrobeats featured prominently, alongside fuji, jazz and zouk. He also appeared at various points in traditional Nigerian outfits, including agbada and dashiki.
According to his team, the performance was designed not only to test his endurance but also to showcase Nigeria’s cultural diversity and different dance traditions.
The challenge attracted large crowds to Freedom Park, with supporters gathering throughout the seven-day performance to encourage the dancer. Videos from the event also circulated widely on social media.
How he managed the challenge
Daniel had reportedly undergone physical training and adjusted his diet ahead of the attempt in preparation for the demands of the marathon.
During the challenge, he was allowed five minutes of rest for every continuous hour of activity. He also maintained hydration and ate lightly, while medical personnel remained available at the venue.
Following the completion of the marathon, Daniel was taken to hospital for a medical check-up.
His evidence will now be submitted to Guinness World Records for assessment. Until the organisation completes its review, the 127-hour mark remains the officially recognised record.
